Cell Paintings
Whereas the other students at Falmouth College of Arts were making etchings of seashell still lives and stormy oil seascapes, I found my inspiration in the biology books in the art school library. The microscopy images of stained tissue sections were fascinating to me in their bright colours, their compartments and complexity, and also because I had no framework for understanding them. Below are the Cell Paintings I made in my first year at Falmouth. Ever since, I have sought to make similarly complex and fascinating paintings myself. I think of them as miniature worlds for my mind to explore.
